Imogene White, 91, of Jonesboro, died September 12, 2010, at St. Bernard Hospital. She was born in Lynn on December 3, 1918, the daughter of Beulah Elizabeth (Goodwin) and Grover Cleveland White. She graduated from high school in 1939 in Bay and then moved to Batesville where she studied business. After working in Memphis, she moved to Pine Bluff where she worked at the Pine Bluff Arsenal. In 1944, she was transferred to Washington, D.C. where she worked in support of the War Department during World War II. In 1953 she began work at the Library of Congress. She retired in 1978 and moved to Jonesboro to care for her elderly mother.
While in Jonesboro, she was an active and contributing member of Southwest Church of Christ. She often visited people in nursing homes and hospitals due to her caring and loving nature. Imogene was a very generous person whose giving spirit led her to contribute to many individuals and organizations throughout her life. She loved to travel and went on many tours, both nationally and internationally. One special trip was to the Holy Land.
Although she did not have children, she treated her nephews and nieces as if they were her own. These include: Goodwin White, Jr. of Camden; Dr. David E. White of Marlborough, NH; Dr. J. Lawrence Jayne, Jr. of Bristol, VA; Martha Elizabeth (Jayne) Smith of Knoxville, TN; Greg White of Augusta, GA; Linda White of Houston, TX; and Matthew Ellis of Hixson, TN. She was preceded in death by her siblings Goodwin White, Avanell Ellis, Harold White, and Evelyn Jayne.
The funeral will be held Friday, September 17, 10 am at Emerson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will begin at 9 am. Burial will be in the family plot at the Dry Creek Cemetery in Lynn. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Southwest Church of Christ.
