Hubert "Pop" Gibson, 87, of Jonesboro, passed from this life on Thursday evening, April 29, 2021, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House, one day short of his 88th birthday.
Hubert was born April 30, 1933, in Bay to L. Dee and Lillian Holloway Gibson and lived there before moving to Jonesboro where he lived most of his life. Pop farmed several years before opening Gibson's Conoco on Gee Street in 1964. He relocated his business to Caraway Road at East Nettleton Avenue and operated the full service station along with his sons for several years before retirement.
Pop was an active member of the Jonesboro Softball Association and was involved in every aspect of it. He coached the Gibson Girls for many years before becoming the regional USSSA Director. He was inducted into the Arkansas Softball Women’s Hall of Fame in 2006 and then in 2007 he was inducted into the Arkansas Softball Hall of Fame. In 2019, the city of Jonesboro declared it Pop Gibson Day as the Jonesboro Softball Association dedicated the youth entrance to the softball fields as Hubert “Pop” Gibson Walkway.
He was a member of Grace Point Church of Christ and was preceded in death by two sons: Donny Gibson and Mike Gibson, four sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ann Gibson; Daughter-in-law, Gayle, sons Roger (Dawn) and Ronnie (Teresa) and daughter Karen (Cheryl);
Grandchildren: Chris (Tina), Molly-Ann, Robbie (Tiffany) and Joey;
Great grandchildren: Dax, Xander, Aisley, Fynnley, and Shelby...his Angel.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday in Emerson Memorial Chapel with David Gibson and Chase Almond officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Log Cemetery. Visitation will precede the funeral service from 12:30 until service time in the chapel.
Active pallbearers include Jody Gibson, Kevin Green, Chad Waddell, Steve Tippit, Terry Gibson and Donnie Prestidge. Honorary pallbearers include The Gibson Girls Softball Teams, Cheryl Frazier, Lee Tilley, Brooks Cravens, Becky Mulhollen, Cassondra Stroman, Ronnie Gibson and Frankie Hafner.
