Herbert Whittingham

January 4, 1920 — July 4, 2017

Herbert Whittingham, 97, of Jonesboro, died Tuesday, July 4th, 2017 at NEA Baptist Hospital. He lived all of his life in Northeast Arkansas. He was a member of the Poplar Valley Free Will Baptist Church and served there as a deacon for over 50 years. Herb served his country during WWII in the US Army Air Corp 381st Bomb Group. He retired from Jonesboro Grocer after working there for over 43 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Julie Whittingham; sisters, Lavone May, Jewel Cooper, Edna Mae Hooker; brothers, O’Neal “Doc” Whittingham, Earl Whittingham, Raymond Whittingham and great granddaughter Whitney Rogers.

Survivors include his wife of 75 years, Louise, of the home; sons, David Whittingham (Dianne); Ricky Whittingham (Pam) of Bono; Dr. Jeff Whittingham (Rachel) of Greenbrier; daughters, Jo Ann Douglas (Robert) of Bono; Debra Lewis (Perry) of Jonesboro; brothers, Paul Whittingham (Lela Faye) of Harrisburg; James Whittingham (Janie) of West Plains, Missouri; sister, Earlene Aston of Trumann; 8 grandchildren, Casey Tate, Amy Reeves, Kevin Whittingham, Kayla Patterson, Sandy Rogers, Abbigail Whittingham, Maggie Whittingham and Chris Lewis; and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, July 7, 2017, at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Ken Winningham, Hoover Lewis, Rick Carter and Donald Winfrey officiating with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial will follow at Trinity Cemetery with Jim Bradley, Gary Holland, Jerry Roth, Terry Barnett, Eric Isbill, Bert Greenwalt, Tom Fielder and Jimmy Martin serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are the McDonald’s Coffee Group, J. W. Russell, Marion Stringer, Jack Meurer, Wayne Tate, Hoover Lewis, and the Adult Sunday School Class at Poplar Valley Free Will Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5-7 Thursday night at Emerson Memorial Chapel.
