Gwyndolyn Sue Brunkhorst

October 31, 1931 — June 20, 2016

Gwyndolyn Sue Johnson Brunkhorst, 84, of Jonesboro, Arkansas passed from this life Monday, June 20, 2016 at Morningside of Jonesboro. Born October 31, 1931 in Springfield Missouri to Robert Gwyn Johnson and Anna May Good Johnson. She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Walter H. Brunkhorst, Jr., and daughter Artie Skaggs.
Gwyn attended Springfield Public Schools and Greenwood High School. She was a member of the Springfield High Kilty Girls, Drum and Bugle Corps.

Gwyn graduated from Drury University in Springfield in 1952. She was a member of Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority. Following her graduation, she attended the University of Michigan for a year, where her post-graduate studies led to her certification as a Registered Dietitian.

In September 1954, following her year at the University of Michigan, she married Walter in Springfield Missouri. They then moved to Kansas where her husband was serving in the Army at Fort Riley. There she took a position as a Wabaunsee County Home Demonstration Agent. Following their stint at Fort Riley, they moved back to Springfield. There Gwyn took a position as a dietitian at Baptist Hospital.
Following a move to Wichita, Kansas in 1960, Gwyn was busy raising three children. As the children got older, she took a position as Dietitian at Sr. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

Then in 1986 the “B’s” decided to “retire” and move to Arkansas to relax. They bought Petty’s Hallmark shop in Jonesboro and “moved south”.

Golf became very important to Gwyn in Jonesboro. She became a member of the Ladies Golf Association of Jonesboro Country Club. Since they bought a home two blocks from the golf course, she would drive her golf cart from her garage to the club frequently.

Gwyn and Walter sold their home and moved into Morningside in the spring of 2010. They loved it immediately.

Gwyn and Walter have been members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Jonesboro since 1986.

Gwyn is survived by her son Walter H. Brunkhorst, III of Jonesboro and her daughter Carol Carpenter-Crumby (Charlie) of Collierville, Tennessee, five grandchildren: Scott Carpenter, Kyle Carpenter, Alexis Teal (Rich), Geoff Mangels and Ashley Brunkhorst and two great grandchildren.

The family especially thanks the staff of Morningside of Jonesboro for their exceptional care and love that they have shown “Ms. B” every single day.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 531 W. College Street, Jonesboro. The service will be Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 2:00 pm with Father Jesse Perkins officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your local food bank and/or Salvation Army.
