Gregory Allen George, 54, died Monday March 6, 2023 at his home in Jonesboro, AR with his wife and son by his side.
Greg was born August 15, 1968 in Oklahoma City, OK to Doyle George and June (Linton) Vickers, being the youngest of 5 children. Greg lived in Oklahoma and Indiana throughout his childhood. He moved to Jonesboro, AR in 1987, when his step-father, Charles Vickers, took a job at Arkansas Glass Company. In 1988, while at a gas station in Jonesboro, he, being a gentleman, offered to pump gas for a young lady and from that moment, he had found his soulmate. Greg and Karen began dating and planning their life together, marrying on October 26, 1996. Their only child, Gunnar, was born in 1998, completing their family.
Greg has worked in several trades in his lifetime, from grocery stores to factories, to restaurant work that eventually led to a managerial position at Perkins Restaurant in Jonesboro. Greg always enjoyed cooking for family and friends but also had the desire to work with his hands. He worked with Crawford Construction for many years as a plasterer and Stucco mason. As his life went on, Greg was always thinking of his future with his wife, and especially his son and college. Greg began working in 2001 at Arkansas State University in Facilities Management, first in custodial then moving on to Skills Trade. The University offered many advantages to employees and family members as well, but what Greg gained from the University, as well as his other jobs, were co-workers who became friends, then they became family. Greg has always been a loyal and caring husband, father, brother, and friend. Greg never met a stranger and has always had the kindest heart.
Greg had completed 10 years of service at Arkansas State University in 2021 and was very proud of this accomplishment, looking forward to another 10 years or more. Sadly, Greg's health began to deteriorate from complications of a stroke in 2021 that changed the life that he knew. Greg, always being strong willed, never gave up on becoming whole again and getting back to his normal life but in 2022 he had another stroke that he eventually succumbed to. He lived his days to the fullest, loving his wife, son, siblings and life long friends he acquired along his life's journey.
Greg has always been a diehard #1 fan of the Dallas Cowboys, making sure he coached each and every game chairside and always looking forward to the next season hoping it was going to be the return to the superbowl of his champion team. Other than enjoying the Cowboys, Greg loved going to the casino with his wife, gathering with friends and family for campfires, having a beer, or playing Wahoo. Greg also enjoyed returning to Oklahoma to see his family and how much all of their families had grown. He loved to listen to all genres of music, but especially loved to hear his wife singing karaoke, and he was always the loudest in the crowd cheering her on. Greg was very involved with his son in all his endeavors from soccer dad, to band dad, and just simply being proud of anything Gunnar was involved in.
Greg is survived by his wife, Karen, and son, Gunnar, of the home. He is also survived by brothers Scott George of Choctaw, OK; Phil George (Laura) of Midwest City, OK; John George of Oklahoma City, OK; sister, Lisa Jones of Oklahoma City, OK; his Mother-in-law Joan Payne of Kennett, MO; several nieces, nephews and their respective families, and many friends especially Joe Monrreal, Doug Ursery, Ken Willie, Kevin Smith, Terry Taylor, the Moose Mafia and his NEA ICU besties. Last, but not least, special recognition to the canine family protector, Amber.
Greg is preceded in death by his parents; his sister-in-law Tammy George; nephew Brian George; father-in-law Don Payne and brother-in-law Jason Payne.
Visitation will be at Emerson Funeral Home starting at 1:00 pm, Friday, March 10, 2023 with service beginning at 2:00 pm. Burial will be private.
