Gordon Atherton Hiett, Sr., 95, of Mountain Home, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Care Manor Nursing Center in Mountain Home.
He was born in Jonesboro on September 20, 1913, to Otho and Clara Hiett.
His younger sister was Meta Hiett Blanchard of Newport, Arkansas. His wife of sixty-eight years was Gladys Carter Hiett. He follows them in death.
He is survived by his children, Linda and her husband, Don Breytspraak, of Mountain Home and his son Gordon Atherton Hiett, Jr. and wife Carolynn of Little Rock. His surviving grandchildren are Donna Lynn and her husband Brent Chambers of Dallas, Texas , Donny Breytspraak and wife Nonnie of Rockwall, Texas, Angela and her husband Eric King of Colcord, Oklahoma, Gordon Hiett, III and wife Michelle of Jacksonville, Florida. His great grandchildren are Jason, Ashely and Justin Chambers, Jacob and Joshua Breytspraak, Hannah and Ryan King, Jake, Ethan, Caleb and Aidan Hiett.
Atherton lived much of his adult life in Leachville. Following retirement he lived in North Little Rock and Pocahontas before moving to Mountain Home. He was a Sunday School teacher, deacon and treasurer of the First Baptist Church in Leachville. He owned the General Insurance Agency and served his community for one term as mayor. He served in many community organizations such as the Leachville Industrial Development Corporation and Chamber of Commerce. He was beloved b y many because he loved so many.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, April 7, 2009, at 11:00 in Emerson Memorial Chapel in Jonesboro with Rev. Dennis Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Jonesboro.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, 10-11, prior to the service at the funeral home.
