In Loving Memory of Geraldine Hammond Nwisi
August 8, 1971 – March 11, 2025
With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Geraldine Hammond Nwisi, a devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.
Born on August 8, 1971, in Osceola, Arkansas, Geraldine was the beloved daughter of Richard Lee Hammond and Rosie Hammond. She was the second of four children and grew up surrounded by the love of her family.
Her early years were spent in Blytheville, Arkansas, under the loving care of Ms. Catherine Bell, a guiding presence in her life. At the age of eight, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where she was raised by her cherished grandmother, Hannah B. Smith. Under her grandmother’s loving tutelage, Geraldine spent countless hours in the kitchen, learning the art of cooking—a skill and passion she carried throughout her life. More than anything, her grandmother wished to pass on the gift of faith, ensuring that all her children and grandchildren knew the love of Christ. Geraldine embraced this faith and accepted Christ as her Savior during her teenage years, a decision that shaped her life and the love she shared with others.
She was a graduate of Bolton High School and later pursued higher education at Arkansas Northeastern College. Known for her quick wit, sharp mind, and boundless generosity, Geraldine never met a stranger—her heart welcomed everyone she encountered.
A true visionary, Geraldine was an entrepreneur and business owner, creating opportunities not only for herself but for others. She also found joy in impacting young lives as a substitute teacher at her local high school, where she became a mentor and source of encouragement to many.
Among her greatest joys was motherhood. She welcomed her first child, Marissa Lashea Hurd, in 1989, embracing the role with love and devotion. On March 14, 2005, she married Bruno Nwisi, her devoted husband of 20 years. Together, they built a beautiful life and welcomed their son, David Demarion Chinenyé Nwisi, in 2006.
Geraldine’s faith and love for service extended beyond her home. She was a dedicated member of her church choir, lifting her voice in praise, and found peace and fulfillment in gardening, nurturing the earth just as she nurtured the hearts around her.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and unwavering faith. Geraldine is survived by her beloved mother, Rosie Hammond; her loving husband, Bruno Nwisi; her cherished children, Marissa Hurd and David Nwisi; her daughter-in-love, Tyisha Stewart ; and her godchildren, Denisicia Ampati, BryAshia Caruthers, and LaSandrea Caruthers.
She is also survived by her sister, Jackquline Myles; her sister, Jeanette Ajitoni (Sunday); her brother, Richard Lee Hammond III (Nikki); and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She is preceded in death by her father, Richard Lee Hammond, her grandmother, Hannah B. Smith, and her goddaughter, Kamori Jones.
Though Geraldine’s earthly journey has come to an end, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her laughter, wisdom, and unwavering faith will forever be cherished.
May we honor her memory by embracing the love she so freely gave and carrying forward the kindness she embodied.
