Geraldine McCourtney, 94, of Jonesboro passed from this life Thursday, March 12, 2015 at St. Elizabeth’s Place. She was born July 6, 1920 in Lamar, Arkansas to the late August Theodore and Hallie Crenshaw Birkhahn. Geraldine moved to Jonesboro in 1943 as a bride, coming from Greene County, Arkansas. She was a member of the Cathedral Baptist Church and was also very active in the Church Auxiliary on the local and state level. Geraldine was a member of the Needlecraft Club of Jonesboro for over 50 years and was also an active member of the Home Demonstration Club. She was elected Queen of St. Elizabeth’s Place and went to district and placed runner up. Geraldine was head advocate of the senior council.
In addition to her parents Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband, Prominent Attorney Bon McCourtney, 2 daughters, 1 brother and 3 sisters.
Survivors include her 3 daughters: Carolyn Tomlinson of Jonesboro, Kathy Cody of Hot Springs, Judy Leek of Odessa, Texas; 1 sister, Helen Boren of San Antonio, Texas; 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, several more great great grandchildren, with a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Funeral service will be held Monday, March 16, 2015 at 2:00 pm in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Matt Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery. Active pallbearers include: Drew Scanlon, Jacob Scanlon, Jerrod Simmons, Jeremy Simmons, Ron Peoples and Dan Peoples. Honorary pallbearers include: Brian Lebow, Michael Speight, James McDaniel, Jim Devazier, Mitch Swindle, Scott Hunter, Troy Henry, Dr. Cory Absher, Dr. Ray Hall Jr. and Dr. Corey Diamond.
Visitation will be 1:00-2:00 pm prior to the service.
