George B. Stewart

October 23, 1926 — August 23, 2014

George Buchanan Stewart was born on 10/23/26 in Howell, AR. He died 8/23/14 in Jonesboro, AR. He leaves his wife, Frieda Brown Stewart of Jonesboro. He was predeceased by his father Walter H. Stewart, his mother Adele Fikes Stewart and his brother Walter Donald Stewart. He leaves two children: Rebecca Stanfield (Roger) and Walter A. Stewart (Kathy); four grandchildren: David Stewart Altfeld (Toni), Leah Hubbard (Andrew), Elizabeth Stanfield and Ross Mathews (Jessica); and two great-grandchildren (Malachi and Vada Mathews.) He and his wife Frieda recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

He grew up in Parkin, AR and joined the army at age 17. He was a veteran of WWII. He attended Hendrix College on the G.I. bill and graduated in 1950. He then joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and worked as a Special Agent for 27 years under J.Edgar Hoover. During his years in the FBI he investigated some of the most famous cases of that era, including The Rosenberg spy case; the John F. Kennedy assassination, the Martin Luther King Jr. assassination and the death of the civil rights activists who were buried in Mississippi.

He was a life-time Methodist and an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro. Mr. Stewart was an avid Red Wolf fan. He loved to spend time at his cabin on Greers Ferry Lake. He was a private pilot and enjoyed flying. He was known for his love of his family and friends, his generosity and his sense of humor.

Funeral service will be at 10am on Tuesday with Rev. Patty Soward officiating. Burial will follow at 4pm in Cearley Cemetery in Bolivar, TN with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of all arrangements.

Visitation will Monday evening from 5-7pm at Emerson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis or the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. The family would like to thank friends and caregivers who made the last months of his life comfortable and happy.

Honorary Pallbearers include all law enforcement officers and all members of the First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro.
