George Peter Dapp, Sr., 87, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, died Thursday, December 9, 2010, at his home of natural causes.
Born in Chicago, George was a 1942 graduate of York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois. He lived many years in Lombard, Illinois and Aurora, Illinois before moving to Blytheville, Arkansas in 1968. He moved to Memphis in 1974 and then to Jonesboro in 1995. He was a Christian and a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II serving in the European and Pacific Theaters and receiving a Bronze Battle Star.
George was discharged from the Army in 1946 and entered college on the GI Bill. He graduated from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, earning a bachelor degree in chemistry. George was a chemist in the inks, carbon and office products business for over 40 years and was the owner of several patents pertaining to this profession. Through the years he worked for Miller Bryant Pierce, Columbian Ribbon Carbon Company, Teledyne Post and Fuji Copian.
George was a volunteer in the Memphis Wonders Exhibit and Methodist Hospital North. He volunteered at NEA Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro and enjoyed golf and bowling before devoting full time to care for his wife. George was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Estelle Kneuker Dapp, a sister, Virginia Dapp Hollen, and a great granddaughter, Evelyn Blain. The family wishes to express deepest gratitude to Dierksen Memorial Hospice personnel for the tender care given to George during his final days.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ruth Walker Dapp of the home;
1 daughter and son-in-law: Diane and Rick Carter of Brookland;
2 sons and daughters-in-law: Steven, Sr. and Maryann Dapp of Jonesboro, and George “Peter”, Jr. and Lorie Dapp of Memphis;
4 grandchildren and their spouses, Maureen and Allen Vanderford, Lauren and Forest Blain, 2nd Lt. Heather Dapp, and Steven Dapp, Jr., all of Jonesboro;
5 great grandchildren, John, Victoria, Joseph and Nathan Vanderford, and Samantha Blain;
1 sister-in-law: Marye Hicken of Jonesboro; and 3 nephews: George Hollen of Colorado, David Hollen of Illinois, and Edward Hicken of Wisconsin; and 2 special doggie “children” Sophie and Hendry.
Funeral services with military honors will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Michael Blackwood officiating. Burial will be private.
Visitation will be held Saturday evening, 5-7, at Emerson Funeral Home.
