George Edmund Dunn

August 21, 1937 — July 9, 2020

George Edmund Dunn was born August 21, 1937 in Clarinda, Iowa to Francis Miller Dunn and Mildred Merl (Shaffer) Dunn. He died Thursday, July 9, 2020 at his home in Jonesboro, Arkansas. George grew up on a family farm in Clarinda, Iowa. He graduated from Clarinda High School in 1956 where he lettered in football and track. After serving in the Navy and working in the oilfields of Saudi Arabia during the 1960s, he began working in the computer industry. In 1971, he was working in Boston where he met and eventually married Emma Leona Berry on June 11 th. Using the money he saved while working in Saudi Arabia, George bought a farm in Violet Hill, Arkansas. George would move his family to Chicago, Memphis and, ultimately, Jonesboro, Arkansas in 1980 to be closer to the farm. In 1980 he also began working for Arkansas State University and he worked at ASU in the computer center until he retired in 2001.

Working in the computer industry as it matured, George enjoyed seeing technology advancements and reading science fiction novels and watching science fiction movies. George enjoyed fishing and duck hunting, especially on the St. Francis river. He also enjoyed taking his three sons to work on the farm where he was unsuccessful as he attempted to teach them that bush-hogging and digging postholes to fix fences was fun. (To any children reading this, it is not fun.) George enjoyed spending time outdoors and served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for all of his sons. He was an avid sports fan, rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, the Arkansas State Indians/Red Wolves and Iowa and Iowa State whenever they played on TV. In his lifetime, he cheered the Cardinals on to eight World Series championships, went to see Arkansas State play football at home and away at many football powerhouses like Alabama and Virginia Tech, attended many of ASU’s bowl games and yet he did not live long enough to see the Razorbacks football team get enough guts to play Arkansas State.

Preceding George in death were: his parents; his brother-in law, Marvin Fulk of Clarinda, Iowa; his sister, Frances Koenigsberg of Sheffield, Iowa; his sister, Delores Billman and her husband Ron of State Center, Iowa; his brother-in-law, Walter Stokes of Paragould, Arkansas; and his sister-in-law Kathleen Dunn of Waverly, Nebraska.

Survivors include: his wife; his children, Walter Dunn and wife Melissa of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Christopher Dunn and wife Bridgette of Haymarket, Virginia, and Edward Dunn and wife Jennifer of Jonesboro, Arkansas; seven grandchildren, Hannah and Ethan (Walter), Angus and Beatrice (Chris), and Richard, Rachel and Nicholas (Edward); and one great grandchild, Rory (Edward); sisters Phyllis Fulk of Clarinda, Iowa and Charlene Stokes of Paragould, Arkansas; brothers, Charles Dunn of Waverly, Nebraska, and Jim Dunn and wife Janet of Clarinda, Iowa; and his brother-in-law, Melvin Koenigsberg of Sheffield, Iowa.
