Freeda Marie Barnes, 94, of Jonesboro, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at Lexington Place Healthcare in Jonesboro.
Born in Egypt, Freeda lived in Dyess before moving to Jonesboro in 1950. She worked several years as a waitress at Roy Garrett's BBQ Restaurant in Jonesboro before retiring. Freeda was a member of Southwest Church of Christ in Jonesboro where she was instrumental in establishing the Brother's Keeper Program at the church. She was also a Girl Scouts assistant leader for several years teaching various programs and initiatives.
Freeda enjoyed gardening, canning, knitting and sewing and was preceded in death by her husband, Elvis Barnes; her parents: Hershel and Nancy Kinder Henson; and 4 brothers: Everett, Coy, Howard and Floyd Henson.
Survivors include 2 daughters and son-in-law: Lillian Kissinger and Nanci and Mark Zimmer, all of Jonesboro;
1 son and daughter-in-law: Stanley and Katherine Jones of Jonesboro;
2 brothers and sisters-in-law: A.J. and Renate Henson and Robert and Denise Henson, all of Memphis;
5 grandchildren and their spouses: Mark and Belinda Wimpy, Perry and Tina Wimpy, Paul and Sheena Zimmer, Mallory and Heath Aldridge and Christine Jones;
5 great grandchildren, and
3 great, great grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Philadelphia Cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation.
