Franklin D Burrell, a beloved 92-year-old resident of Jonesboro, Arkansas, peacefully passed away at his home on January 30, 2025. Born in Phil Campbell, Alabama, to Clifford and Brownie Burrell, Frank lived a fulfilling life, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of love that will be deeply missed.
A proud graduate of Memphis College's first graduating journalism class in 1957, Frank embarked on a career in the newspaper industry, beginning as a sports editor shortly after graduation. Throughout his life, he remained active and passionate about sports, both playing and cheering for his favorite teams. Frank was also a devoted family man who found joy in the great outdoors, especially through gardening.
As a lifelong devout Christian, Frank was a faithful member of Highland Drive Baptist Church, where he drew strength and inspiration from reading the Bible, completing it nearly 30 times over his lifetime. He had a particular fondness for animals, especially dogs and cats, reflecting his love for all of God’s creations.
Frank is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Auburn and Wayne Burrell.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Novalee Burrell, who continues to reside at home; his daughter, Melanie Nichols, and her husband, Matthew, of Memphis; his granddaughter, Victoria Boyd, of Jonesboro; his great-granddaughter, Abigail Boyd; as well as numerous cherished nieces and nephews.
In honor of Frank’s life, a visitation will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Emerson Memorial Chapel. The funeral service, led by Dr. Johnny Hutchison, will commence at 2:00 p.m. and will be followed by interment at Trinity Cemetery.
