Elwood A. Freeman, Sr., 92, of Jonesboro, died Saturday morning at his home. Born in Jacksonport, he had lived in Jonesboro since 1936. He was a member of First Christian Church and had taught Sunday School for 35 years. He was a World War II Army veteran having served in the Philippines and New Guinea. He had attained the rank of First Sergeant. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion, having received an award for 60 years of continuous service and was the oldest member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge and member of the Craighead County Detention Board. Mr. Freeman was also the founder of the Westvale Water System and president of Elwood Freeman Co., Inc., a utility contracting firm.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elaine Stanfield Freeman, of the home; his son, Woody Freeman and his wife Lynda, Jonesboro; grandchildren, Brooks Freeman Brown, Tory Dee Freeman; and great grandchildren, Hudson Brown and Holden Brown; and his nephews and niece, Kent Freeman, David Freeman, and Ann Johnson.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery with military honors. Father David Porterfield will officiate and Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Active pallbearers will be David Freeman, Kent Freeman, Doyle McCain, Todd Brown, Mike Fullington, and Ron Shelton.
There will be no visitation.
