Susie Grommet of Jonesboro, Arkansas, was called to her Lord's side on June 2, 2026.
Susie was born in San Diego, California, but spent most of her growing-up years in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where she graduated from Watson Chapel High School. She then attended the University of Central Arkansas. Afterward, she began her career as a teacher in the Harrisburg School District, but found her true vocation teaching special-needs students at The Learning Center in Jonesboro, where she worked for more than 35 years.
After retiring, Susie was busier than ever and volunteered regularly with the Helping Neighbors Food Pantry, Two Saints Kitchen, United Cerebral Palsy, and many other organizations.
She was a faithful member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Jonesboro, Arkansas, where through the years she sang in the choir, played handbells, served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister, taught Sunday school, served on the vestry, and contributed in innumerable other ways, both great and small.
When not volunteering, Susie was an avid quilter and was always working on a new quilt for a friend or loved one. Her love was truly in every stitch.
It is impossible to sum up the whole of a life well lived in a few lines or paragraphs, but Susie's life was one of service, caring, sacrifice, faith, and love. Her greatest joy in this world was being a grandparent and few things brought her more happiness than spending time with her granddaughters.
Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne M. Grommet of Jonesboro; her parents, Harold Petitt Nelson and Mary Ellen Groome Nelson of Pine Bluff; her brothers, Kenneth Nelson of Little Rock and Harold "Hal" Nelson of Memphis; her sisters, Betsy Nelson and Mary Lynn Webb of Pine Bluff, and Anne Pick of Salem.
She is survived by her son, Michael Grommet (Cindy) of Jonesboro; her sister, Jane Johnson (Mark) of Fayetteville; her granddaughters, Abigail, Emily, Kristen, and Caitlyn Grommet of Jonesboro; along with many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Jonesboro on June 27, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with a celebration of life and reception following at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to the Helping Neighbors Food Pantry or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
