Elbert Dean Carr, 91 years of age, passed away from this life on January 4, 2023 in Gulfport MS.
He leaves behind his beloved and devoted wife Glenda Ruth Johnson Carr, of Long Beach, MS, Daughter, Lou Ann Edmonds of Mesa, AZ, Son, Micheal Dean Carr of Long Beach, MS. Loving and caring Father-In-Law to Michael R Edmonds and Tina Griggs Carr. He was a amazing Papa to Erik Elbert Edmonds, of Mesa AZ, Mallory Ann Dixon, of Mesa AZ, Micheal Chandler Carr, of Long Beach MS, Ellen Elizabeth Carr, of Brooklyn, NY, Great Papa to Zoey Ann Dixon, William Harrison Dixon, Owen Michael Haytak, and Mary Micheal Carr.
Elbert was born on a farmstead outside Black Oak, Arkansas on September 7, 1931 to Oran Lee and Betty Jane Howard Carr. He was preceded in death by his parents. Also preceded in death by his brothers, Oran Lee Carr Jr, Bill Carr, Bob Carr and his sister, Jewell Jones Theobald. Elbert is also survived by his sister Betty Jean Stewart of Bakersfield , Ca. Many Nephews and Nieces that he loved dearly.
Elbert was a member of the Nettleton Church of Christ for most of his adult life. He served as a Deacon and served in the Benevolence Ministry for many years.
Elbert served in the United States Army. He trained in the food Services Dept. in Newark, NJ, and Thule, Greenland
Elbert and Glenda Owned Carr’s Grocery from 1959 to 2008. They served countless students and friends across the street from the ASU Campus, telling them how much they appreciated their business! Their home away from home became much more than a grocery store, it became known as the student bank, Gas Station and then the amazing “What’s Cookin” breakfast and lunch place.
At their Retirement Party held at the store, they were awarded the gift of a framed certificate of Honorary Alumni Assoc. Membership.
Elbert was a kind, meek and giving man. He had hobbies of woodwork, and a love of Lake life on a pontoon boat on Lake Norfork with his children and extended family.
In 2020 they sold their home as age took advantage, they moved to Long Beach, MS to be with Mike and Tina.
Elbert loved God and often spoke of his faith. For many years he wrote his thoughts down in countless notebooks while sitting in the carport with his cat. He will forever be missed by his family and friends.
A remembrance will be held, Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Emerson Funeral Home, 1629 E Nettleton Avenue, Jonesboro, AR 72401 from 2 to 4pm.
