Dr. William Warren Byrd

Dr. William Warren Byrd, 77, of Jonesboro, died Wednesday February 11, 2009 at St. Bernard's.

He was born in Cleveland, Mississippi, and lived in Jonesboro most of his life. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a professor at Arkansas State University for 38 years.

Dr. Byrd began his teaching career at Arkansas State University in 1955, and taught Biology, Zoology, and Herpetology. He also served as chairman of the pre-medical advisory committee and the schools Athletic committee for a decade.

Dr. Byrd graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with degrees in biology and zoology. He went on to achieve his masters degree and continued to pursue his doctorate for 2 more years. He has published at least 35 articles in various science journals over the years. He retired in 1992.

In November 2006, Arkansas State University named a biology complex in honor of Professor Byrd, where he earned the honorary title of professor emeritus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Berry L and Beatrice Johnston Byrd Kalif and one brother, Berry L Byrd Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Frances Guerieri Byrd of the home, one son, William Warren Byrd II and wife Sammye of Maumelle, Arkansas.

Three daughters Michele Byrd Hegwood and husband Dr. C Patrick of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Gloria Byrd of Springdale Arkansas and Kimberly Byrd Shepherd and husband Peter of Prairie Grove, Arkansas.

Twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14th at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Father Mark Wood officiating, with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, family requests that donations be made to the Dr. William W. Byrd Science Laboratory fund at Arkansas State University, or the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
