Dr. Robert S. Cohen, 92, of Jonesboro, died of natural causes Sunday, January 8, 2012, at his home.
Dr. Cohen was born in Fredericktown, Missouri, and lived in Birmingham, AL, Poplar Bluff, MO, and Memphis, TN before moving to Jonesboro in 1975. Dr. Cohen earned an undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and a Medical degree from University of Arkansas Medical Sciences. He practiced internal medicine and hematology for the Veterans Administration Hospitals and was the first director of Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in Jonesboro. He was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church and was a veteran of W.W. II, serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
Dr. Cohen was an avid card player, having attained the rank of Bronze Life Master at Bridge. He was also a formidable opponent at the gin and poker tables.
He was preceded in death by his parents, O.T. and Cecilia Cohen, and by his sister, Mary Cecilia Cooper. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Erika Prinz Cohen of the home, married in March 1948 in Wuppertal, Germany; two sons, Stephen Cohen and wife Betty Cohen of Conway, and Jeffrey Cohen and wife Gayle of Jonesboro; one daughter, Ilsa Hallan and husband Jerry of Jacksonville, Florida; six grandchildren, Bobby and Anne Cohen, Patrick and Jeremy Cohen, Jennifer and Kyle Creason; and two great grandchildren, Olivia and Bowie Creason.
A memorial service will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Jesse Perkins officiating. Private burial will be in Fredericktown, Missouri. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, 6-8, at Emerson Funeral Home.
