Dr. Mark McCollough Smith was born June 8th, 1956, to Dr. Walter Myers Smith and Allene Matthews Boyd in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He attended school in North Little Rock and graduated from Northeast High School in 1974. He graduated from Hendrix College in 1978 and then graduated from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with a Doctor of Medicine in 1983. He worked as a primary care physician in Monette, Paragould, and Marion, Arkansas, as well as in emergency medicine and urgent care in various settings for many years. He was an emergency department physician at St. Bernards Medical Center for over 25 years and spent his professional life providing excellent medical care to his patients.
Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sue Diaz. He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Carmen (Parrish) Smith; his brother, Dr. Kirk (Barbara) Smith and sister, Barbara “Loal” Luna; his children Lauryn Williams (Dan Smith), Austin Smith, Natalie Harrell (Logan), and Erica Haynes; grandchildren Heidi and Bennett Harrell, Arthur Williams, Salem Haynes, and Aria Adams. Nieces, nephews, cousins, and a lifetime of dear friends also survive him.
An avid golfer, Mark enjoyed a day on the course as often as he could. He consistently sought new challenges and was rewarded with new skills, from playing the mandolin to flying planes to speaking German. He also enjoyed music, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends. He was known for his quick wit and effortless sense of humor. He enjoyed watching football and was known to “call the hogs.” He loved a day on the lake with friends.
A service celebrating Mark’s life will be held at Emerson Funeral Home on April 5, 2025. Visitation will be at 12:30, with services at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Bernards Cancer Care or the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House.
