Douglas A. Cobb

Douglas A. Cobb, 84, of Jonesboro, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Born in Gurdon, Coach Cobb moved to Jonesboro at the age of 9, following his father’s death. He was a teacher and coach for 42 years, serving 3 years at Egypt High School and the remainder in the Jonesboro School District. Coach Cobb taught in elementary, Junior High and Senior High.

During his career, Coach Cobb won the 1959 State Junior High Basketball Tournament, the 1962 State High School Basketball Tournament, the 1980 State High School Golf Tournament and the 1984 State High School Tennis Tournament. He was named the 1962 Arkansas High School Basketball Coach of the Year.

Coach Cobb was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II. He earned Bachelor and Master degrees from Arkansas State University and was an avid sportsman, deeply enjoying fishing, hunting and training bird dogs. He was preceded in death by his brother: Clifford Cobb, and by a sister: Pauline Collins.

Survivors include:
His wife: Martha Cobb of the home;

1 Son and Daughter-in-law: Michael and Linda Cobb of Jonesboro;

2 Sisters: Cleo Brinkley of Portland, Oregon, and
Lola Kelley of Montrose, Colorado;

5 Grandchildren, and
8 Great Grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Patty Soward officiating. Burial will be private.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, 5-7, at Emerson Funeral Home Chapel.
