Dorothy Keith Bates

July 10, 1910 — October 23, 2006

Dorothy Lee Keith Bates, 96, of Pocahontas, died Monday evening, October 23, 2006, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

A native and life-long resident of Pocahontas, Mrs. Bates was a retired Water and Soil Agent for the United States Department of Agriculture, and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pocahontas.

Mrs. Bates authored 27 books on cross wording, and was the only person ever to receive
the New York Times Puzzle Critic Award.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Ernest Bates.

Survivors include:

2 Sisters: Mrs. S.L. (Tincie) Richardson of Hoxie, and
Martha Taylor May of Jonesboro;

3 Nephews: Gary Gazaway,
Rudy Gazaway, and
Keith Richardson, all of Pocahontas;

2 Nieces: Joanne Richardson of Jonesboro, and
Mary Lou Bryant of Bay;

A memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon, October 29, 2006, at 2:30 at First United Methodist Church of Pocahontas with Rev. Fred Hunter officiating.

Private burial will be in Masonic Cemetery in Pocahontas.
