Dorothy Alma "Brownie" Phillips Gibson, 95, of Jonesboro, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born March 14, 1923, in Weiner, Arkansas, to William Paris and Ethel Byrum Phillips. Brownie was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Claude Walter Gibson; her parents, her sister Gladys Lorene Phillips Bulla; a son William (Bill) Gibson; and a daughter-in-law, Brenda Sue Gibson.
Survivors include two children, a son, Dennis Wayne (the late Brenda) Gibson and a daughter, Janelle Gibson (Don) Seat, a daughter-in-law, Jeannette (Thompson) Gibson all of Jonesboro. Also five grandchildren, William (Melinda) Gibson, Jr. of Missouri, Monica (Randy) Stimach of Jonesboro, Leigh Anne (Rob) Robinson of El Dorado, Arkansas, Candance Jolly of Jonesboro and Elisa (Phillip) Kifer also of Jonesboro. Additional survivors include nine great grandchildren, Shane (Taylor) Gibson of Oklahoma, Corrie (Ryan) Selig of Missouri, Brock (Caitlin) Stimach of Jonesboro, Brody Stimach of Jonesboro, Emma Robinson and Reaves Robinson both of El Dorado, Arkansas, Gabrielle Jolly of Jonesboro and Madilyn Kifer and Collin Kifer also of Jonesboro, as well as one great great granddaughter, Nora Grace Stimach of Jonesboro, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday, February 4, 2019, at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Bro. Don Seat and Bro. Jimmy Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park. Visitation will precede the funeral service from 9:30-10:30 in Emerson Chapel.
Active pallbearers include Bill, Jr. and Melinda Gibson, Randy and Monica Stimach, Rob and Leigh Anne Robinson, Candance Jolly, Phillip and Elisa Kifer, Honorary pallbearers include members of Big Creek Valley Missionary Baptist Church and the Oak Grove Extension Homemakers Club.
Dorothy "Brownie" Gibson was a long-time member of Big Creek Valley Missionary Baptist Church of Jonesboro, Arkansas, where she was the church clerk, a Sunday school teacher and the pianist. She was a Christian woman whose testimony could be seen in her daily walk and her love for the Lord. In addition to her faith, Brownie loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She was a loving and dedicated homemaker who enjoyed cooking and was always known to feed anyone who sat at her table. She is well known for her 'fried pies' and homemade 'sweet pickles.'
Brownie loved gardening, growing vegetables and flowers, and working outside in her yard. She also enjoyed sewing, bird watching, traveling, music and reading. Brownie was an avid reader and loved reading and writing poetry. Her favorite book to read was her Bible, which she read through many times. she participated in the Women Missionary Auxiliary Association (WMA) for many years and was also a long-time active member of the Oak Grove Extension Homemakers Club (EHCO) which she served in her community for many years.
One of Brownie's favorite verses was, "Thou wilt keep Him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee; because he trusted in Thee...blessed be the name of the Lord." Isaiah 26:3.
