Doris Thompson

Doris D. Thompson, 88, of Jonesboro, passed from this life Monday, July 18, 2022, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Born near Black Oak in eastern Craighead County, Doris left Black Oak with her family during the flood of 1937 and settled near Egypt in western Craighead County. She graduated from Egypt High School where she was a standout basketball player and cheerleader for the boys basketball teams.

Following high school, Doris attended Arkansas State College in Jonesboro, married Joe Thompson in 1954 and settled in Jonesboro to begin their family. Doris worked most of her adult life in bookkeeping and accounting and was employed for several years for Home Federal Savings and Loan and the Arkansas Human Development Center.

Doris was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro where she was a member of the adult life group and in years past volunteered in Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed quilting, sewing reading, gardening, canning and raising flowers. Doris was a passionate fan of the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Maude Fort Merritt, one sister and two brothers.

Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Joe T. Thompson, married April 10, 1954;

1 son and daughter-in-law: Ron and Norissa Thompson of Mountain Home;

2 daughters and son-in-law: Cynthia and David Bradshaw of Pine Bluff and Roblyn Smith of Siloam Springs;

7 grandchildren and their spouses: Ryan and Avery Thompson, Rachael and Van Dwinnells, Rebekah and Alex Stults, Chris and Amber Bradshaw, Josh and Jessica Bradshaw, Ethan Smith and Ashlin Smith; and

7 great grandchildren: Addison, Benson, Huckston, Tucker, Wyatt, Grant and Mackenzie.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Bill Panneck officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will precede the funeral service from 9:00-10:00 a.m. in chapel.
