Doris Deanhardt Thompson, 97, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2024 at Craighead County Nursing Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas after battling a long illness. She was born April 26, 1927 in Belton, South Carolina. Doris was the last remaining child of 10 by the late William Bruno and Annie Myrtle Moore Deanhardt of Belton, South Carolina. After graduating Belton-Honea Path High School, she married the late Dr. Walter Thompson on August 20, 1949. She supported her husband working as a cashier while he was obtaining his doctorate degree at Cornell University in New York. Their first son was born while they were in New York. After graduation, they moved to North Carolina where Walter worked for the Kinston DuPont Company as a research chemist in the textile division, and Doris became a homemaker. While in North Carolina two more sons were born. In early 1971, The family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee with the Dupont Company. In 1983, Doris and Walter were transferred again to Columbia, South Carolina, where they retired in 1985. In 2011, they moved, due to health issues, to Jonesboro, Arkansas to be near their son Michael.
Doris was involved in several Baptist Churches and enjoyed playing Duplicate Bridge, becoming a Life Master. She was a big Alanta Braves fan and drove down to watch them in Florida several times during Spring Training. Doris was such a big fan, that if the Braves were playing, she would refuse to talk on the phone to her children or grandchildren until after the game! She and Walter were also very active in raising three sons, Dr. Michael Thompson, Periodontist in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Jim Thompson, Architect in Nashville, Tennessee, and Dean Thompson, Retired Mechanical Engineer in Augusta, Georgia.
Doris and Walter were married for 63 years, and they leave behind three Sons, Dr Michael Thompson (Paula), Jim Thompson, and Dean Thompson (Lisa). In addition, she also leaves behind six grandchildren Laura Thompson, Paul (Caitlin) Thompson, Lindsey Thompson, Mitchell (Rachel) Thompson, Jonathan (Ashley) Pyle, and Nate Pyle. Also, surviving are great grandchildren Bayleigh, Charles, Beckham, and Linden Thompson.
A private funeral service will be held at Emerson Funeral Home. The family ask that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the charity of their choice in lieu of flowers.
