Doris E. Moody

Doris E. Moody, 82, of Jonesboro, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House.

Born in Black Oak to Lawrence and Marguerite Jones Skidmore, Doris was a 1949 graduate of Black Oak High School. She earned Bachelor and Master degrees from Arkansas State University and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. While attending ASU, Doris served two terms as president of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi.

Doris taught school in 4 states and Europe while her husband, Herbert E. “Gene” Moody, completed a 20-year career in the U.S. Army. During their marriage, the Moodys moved 19 times while serving overseas, state side and at West Point. The family moved to Jonesboro in 1974 and Doris finished her teaching career at Hillcrest Elementary with over 25 years of service.

Doris was a member of First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro where she was a member of the choir, Friendship Sunday school class and Susanna Circle of United MethodistWomen. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jimmy Strickland, a brother-in-law, Jim Cockrum and her parents.

In addition to her husband, survivors include 2 sons, John Keith Moody (Jodi) of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Michael E. Moody (Ann) of Huntsville, Alabama;
3 sisters, Sammie Pate (Ed) of Monette, Billie Cockrum of Mountain Home and Wanda (John) Grisham of Mountain View; and
5 grandchildren: Andrew Moody of Huntsville, Benjamin Moody of Chengdu, China, Claire Moody of Huntsville, Olivia Moody of Knoxville and Grace Moody of Knoxville.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Patty Soward officiating. Private burial will follow. Members of the Friendship Sunday school class, Susanna Circle and Kappa Delta Pi will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:00 in Emerson Chapel.
