David John Roades

June 8, 1942 — July 1, 2013

David John Roades, 71, of Jonesboro died Monday, July 1, 2013, at The Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House.

He was born June 8, 1942 in Santa Monica, CA to the late Pearl Semenko Carlson and Ralph Harold Roades.

David attended schools in Santa Monica and served four years in the US Air Force where he worked in the aircraft A&G area. While stationed at Edwards A.F.B., he met Ingrid Johnson of Palmdale, eldest of nine children. Being raised as an only child, David enjoyed interacting with this large stalwart family and on June 15, 1963 they married for time and eternity in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and recently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

David attended Lancaster and Pierce Colleges majoring in Accounting. As a member of the Brick-Layer Union he worked for Johnson Brother’s Tile Company of Inglewood, CA. In 1968 he bought Roscoe-Woodley Shell in Sepulveda, CA and became Shell Oil’s youngest dealer. He became part of the Buddy-L program operating several Shell stations in the San Fernando Valley for the oil company. His own station was the second largest retailer of fuel in California.
As time went by and the fuel business changed, he became more deeply involved in automotive repair and was determined to be the best. Over time, he sold out and moved the family to Thousand Oaks, CA where he continued in the automotive repair business.

In 1985 the family moved to Jonesboro to be near Ingrid’s mother, Margery Dennis Johnson. David built University Auto Center and was in business there until 2011 when he retired. He was an active member of the Jonesboro Ward, LDS church. David was a collector of coins, enjoyed going to the gun firing range and especially loved taking trips in the RV with the family when they would camp, hunt, fish, or take trips to the beach. Paradise Cove in Malibu was a favorite outing. David was very close to his five sons.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ingrid of the home; sons, Ronald of Benbrook, TX, John (Suzette) and Jason (Rocio) both of Jonesboro, Bryan (Stephanie) of Henderson, NV, and Michael (Courtney) of Las Vegas, NV, 12 grandchildren; and two half brothers, Ralph and Mike Roades of MO.

Services will be Saturday July 6 at 11:00am in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with Bishop Steven Green officiating. Dedication of the grave will take place at Oaklawn Cemetery with Emerson Funeral in charge of all arrangements.
