David L. Hawkins

January 15, 1946 — December 19, 2007

David L. Hawkins went to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 19th. David was born January 15, 1946, in Doniphan, Missouri, and lived there until joining the Army where he served for four years followed by four years with the Navy Reserve. David moved to Jonesboro in 1969 to attend Arkansas State University where he received a BSE and MSE in Biology. He was a dedicated and beloved teacher for the Jonesboro School District for thirty-two years. He taught Physical Science at Douglas MacArthur Junior High and Biology at Jonesboro High School. David retired from teaching in 2006. An avid outdoorsman, David owned and operated Tanana Canoes on Spring River for thirteen years. He also had a passion for Corvette cars. Survivors include his wife Linda Waire Hawkins of the home; two sisters, Muriel Griggs of Warm Springs, Missouri and Glenna Ellis of Naylor, Missouri; one brother, George Hawkins of Piedmont, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his parents, Elvin and Faye Hawkins, one brother, Phillip Hawkins and his father-in-law, James J. Waire. Pallbearers will be John Tate, Bruce Yeager, Captain (Dr.) Louis Tripoli, Elbert Frazier, Keith Griggs, Joe Cullum and Tommy Lackey. A Celebration of Life Service will be Friday morning at 11:00 in the Chapel of Emerson Funeral Home with Emil Williams and Bruce Tippit officiating. Visitation will precede the service from 9:30 until 11:00. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery in Judsonia, Arkansas at 3:00. The family requests that you consider Crowley’s Ridge Nature Center, 600 East Lawson Road, Jonesboro, Arkansas 72404, as a lasting memorial.
