Daniel R. Hoyt Professor Emeritus of Management at Arkansas State University for 25 years passed away on April 19, 2007, at his home in Palm Bay, FL. Born on May 20, 1943, he is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sara and two daughters and sons-in-law, Michael and Judith Danielle (Hoyt) Straub of Indialantic, FL. and Justin and Audrey Elizabeth (Hoyt) Darnell of Olive Branch, MS, and his first grandson Daniel Ray that will arrive in two weeks. Preceded in death by his mother, Oletha Belle Hoyt he is survived by his father Rexford Hoyt of Joplin, MO, three brothers, Roger Hoyt of Kansas City, MO, Kenneth Hoyt of Arlington, TX, and Howard Hoyt of Lee’s Summit, MO and one sister, Shelly Kneeland of Webb City, MO.
During his tenure at ASU he served as the First Director of the Transportation Management Program and helped to secure a 1.5 million dollar endowment for that program. He was also the First Director of the College of Business Internship Program and had over 1200 student interns worldwide during his career.
Dr. Hoyt received the outstanding faculty member award in teaching, research, and service in 1984. Nationally and internationally, he was very active in the Society of Human Resources Management where he served a two-year term as Vice President of personnel research, a 12-year term on the Board of Directors of the SHRM Foundation, and two years as President of that foundation. In 2001, Dr. Hoyt was the first to receive the Jim Wilkins Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arkansas State Council of SHRM.
Dr. Hoyt also was a visiting professor for five different terms at the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai, China. This school funded by the city of Shanghai and the European Union as a joint venture provided a western style MBA program for Chinese Nationals. Dr. Hoyt taught HR Management, Career Development, and Management Development among other courses at CEIBS. In 2004, he was the first foreign national professor invited to address 1200 HR professionals at the National Chinese Conference on the subject of leadership.
Dr. Hoyt received his Eagle Scout in 1953 and graduated from Joplin High School, Joplin, MO, in 1961. He received his Associate of Science Degree from Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, MO. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics with a minor in Management with honors from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1965. His MBA from the University of Memphis in 1968 and his Ph.D in Industrial Organization and Regulated Industries and a formal minor in Human Resources Management from the University of Nebraska in 1976.
After retiring to FL, he continued to teach at Webster University, Space Coast Campuses. Dr. Hoyt loved teaching and helping students to develop their talents to be successful in today’s global business world. He was an active member in the Christ United Methodist Church in Palm Bay, FL where he was the Treasurer.
A Memorial Service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church in Palm Bay, FL at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2007. Visitation will be held from 5-7 on Monday, April 23, at Emerson Funeral Home in Jonesboro, AR. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24 at Emerson Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to be given to the Dan Hoyt Human Resources Management Scholarship or the Hoyt International Business Scholarship at Arkansas State University Foundation.
