Col. Joseph F. Chambers

Colonel Joseph F. Chambers, 92, of Jonesboro died Friday at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was also a retired Colonel from the United States Air Force. He served the US in both World War II and Korea. After his retirement he taught at Southern Baptist College where he later served as Dean. He was very active in the Area Agency on Aging and was instrumental in getting legislation passed for the care of the elderly. He was an avid outdoorsman and beagler and was an original member of the Bologna-gravy hunting club.

He is survived by two daughters, Susie Bowling of Jonesboro and Rebecca Stark and husband Frank of Fort Smith; three brothers, Alan Chambers of Ravenden Springs, Max Chambers of Augusta, Georgia, and Rex Chambers of Vincennes, Indiana; two sisters, Ethel Byrer and Raymona McClure, both of Bicknell, Indiana; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alvaro Chambers; his parents, Levi and Roxy Chambers; one brother, Donald William Chambers; and two sisters, Eileen Bond and Bea Bastide.

Services will be Tuesday in Emerson Memorial Chapel at 11 a.m. with Bruce Tippit, and Kathy Holler officiating. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home in charge.

Pallbearers will be Steve Stark, Brian Stark, Scott Stark, Rodney Chambers, Bruce Smith, Ralph Bowling, Tom Chambers, and Frank Stark. Honorary pallbearers will be Rex, Max and Allen Chambers and members of the Roy Jolly Sunday School Class.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Those wishing to leave lasting memorials are asked to consider First Baptist Care Center or Special Olympics Area 7.

The family also would like to recognize Delma Toler and Ruth Ann Adams with loving gratitude.
