Obituary

Charles Edward Free, 84, of Jonesboro, passed from this life on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Bryan, Texas, to the late Herman and Aline Free.

Charles proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of Staff Sergeant after 22 years of dedicated service. Following his military retirement, he continued his career in civil service as an air traffic controller, eventually retiring in 2000 in Jonesboro. Throughout his career, Charles demonstrated a strong work ethic, a sense of duty, and a commitment to serving others.

On August 3, 1962, Charles married the love of his life, Mildred. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and devotion to one another. Their marriage was a testament to their enduring love and commitment, and Charles treasured the years they shared together.

A man of deep and abiding faith, Charles was a devoted member of Strawfloor Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon after moving to Jonesboro. His relationship with the Lord was an important part of his life, and he took great pride in serving his church and congregation. Charles lived his faith through his dedication to his family, his church, and those around him.

Above all, Charles was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He cherished his family and the memories they made together. He will be remembered for his faithful service to his country, his unwavering Christian faith, and the love and devotion he shared with those closest to him.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mildred Free; sister, Alice Kathryn; and niece, Rhonda Slaven.

He is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Free of the home and Christa Estes (Anthony) of Cash; son, Erick Free of Greenbrier; sisters, Patsy Moore (Robert) of Cuero, Texas, and Sandra Millikin; grandchildren, Jordan Free of Bono, Britney Connally (Jordan) of Jonesboro, Dylan Estes (Sheiyanne) of Cash, and Camille Chapa (Tristan) of Colorado City; and eight great-grandchildren, Genesis, Laiklyn, Kamdyn, Jacob, Jayden, Kaeson, Paisley, and Israel. He also leaves behind a host of extended family, church family, and friends who will cherish his memory.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 6, 2026, at Emerson Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m., with Don Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.
