Charles B. Smith Jr., 86, of Jonesboro died Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at his home. He was a native of Henry County Virginia and moved to Jonesboro in 1975 from Delaware. He was the General Manager for the Jonesboro DuPont location for eleven years and worked for DuPont for over 30 years. Charles served as a naval officer during WWII and the Korean War. He was the president of the United Way Board and the campaign chairman. In 1980-81 he served as the chair for the Chamber of Commerce also serving on the Simmons Bank and the American Red Cross Board. In 1981 he received the Arkansas Community Development Award for Exceptional Accomplishment. Charles received his BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech and also attended University of North Carolina, S. C. Princeton and Columbia University.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents Charles B. and Helen Smith; sister, Maurine Smith. Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Rhoda White Smith of the home; children, Elayne David of Orlando, Florida; Ginny Jayroe Tubbs and husband Rick; Margie Kemper and husband Ray; Jack Jayroe III all of Jonesboro; brother, Rayford B. Smith and wife Patsy of Martinsville, Virginia; grandchildren, Brandon Tubbs, Lindsey Tubbs Wilcox (Todd), Laurie Kimmel, Justin Jayroe (Shannon), Skyler Jayroe, J.T. Jayroe, Joshua Jayroe; great grandchildren, Heath Wilcox, Seth Wilcox, nephew, Bill Petrey, 2 nieces, 2 great nieces and one aunt.
Visitation will be from 4:30 – 6:00 PM Thursday night at Emerson Funeral Home. All other services will be private with Rev. Jesse Perkins officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Bob Schuchardt, Charley Joseph, Jerry Touchstone, Frank Sloan, Leon Burns, John Hopkins, and L. C. “Buddy” Halsell.
