Cecil Metzgar passed away on March 13, 2007 at the age of 83. Born and raised in northwest Pennsylvania, he moved to Jonesboro in 1944 after serving in the Army during WWII where he was stationed in the Philippines. Cecil came to Arkansas to begin his family which started when he married his wife of 61 years, Betty Wilson Metzgar. The family came to included two children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Cecil was a master electrician who worked for Alan Grace Electric, Stewart Electric, was a charter member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local 1516, and then served as their Business Manager for 14 years. He then owned and operated his own heat, air, and electrical service known as Metzgar Service. He inherited a love of teaching from his mother who graduated with a teaching degree from Penn State College in 1917. Cecil taught the electrical apprenticeship program for many years and then began teaching at Jonesboro High Vo-Tech and Delta Vo-Tech which he continued up until two years ago. He was active in the Democratic Central Committee, the Retired Teachers Association, the Good Sam Club, Gideon’s International, a volunteer driver program for the Veteran’s Hospital in Little Rock, AR, and served as President of the Exchange Club in 1977-78. Cecil was a prominent member of the Forest Home Nazarene Church where he was well appreciated for his beautiful tenor voice and love of singing.
Mr. Metzgar is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Gordon Metzgar and wife Charlotte of Jonesboro; daughter, Pam Andrews and husband Jim of North Little Rock; grandchildren, Margo Rogers and husband Bryce, Meredith Metzgar, Brandye Pierce, Nick Andrews, and Alex Andrews, great-grandchildren; Olivia Metzgar, Sophia Rogers, and Jett Pierce.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening, March 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Emerson Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Friday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Emerson. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.. Pallbearers are Nick Andrews, Alex Andrews, Jim Andrews, David Panneck, Brent Panneck, Bryce Rogers, Millard Cooper, Earnie Stallings and Herb Stallings.
