Carroll Dean Scroggin, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, died Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at NEA Baptist Hospital in Jonesboro, Arkansas, after a brief illness.
He was 88. Carroll was born on Oct. 20, 1932, to Joseph Henry Scroggin and Eva Lee Harwood Scroggin in Center Ridge, Arkansas.
In addition to his parents, Carroll was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Biggadike Scroggin; a son, Roy Robert Holden Scroggin; brothers Afton Scroggin, Wilburn Scroggin, James Wendell Scroggin, Richard Doyle Scroggin and Edwin Ray Scroggin; and sister, Margaret Evelyn Scroggin.
He is survived by son Dr. Carroll Dean Scroggin, Jr. and wife Ruth of Jonesboro, Arkansas; son Joseph Henry Scroggin of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; brother, Ben Scroggin and wife Gay of North Little Rock, Arkansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a graduate of Center Ridge High School and a 1955 graduate of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
A gifted athlete, Carroll was a three-year letterman on the Razorback basketball team and served as co-captain of the 1954-55 team. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, then settled in Palos Verdes Estates, California, where he raised his family and was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church for over forty years. He returned to Arkansas in 2011.
He was a longtime and popular Little League baseball coach. Carroll enjoyed duplicate bridge and was an avid fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arkansas Razorbacks.
He is buried in Green Hills Cemetery in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, with a private memorial service to be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to NEA Baptist Charitable Foundation, P.O. Box 1960, Jonesboro, Arkansas 72403.
