Carol Linnea Wallace Cummings passed away Friday, September 2 nd in Jonesboro, AR at the age of 88 after a lengthy illness. She was born Nov. 7, 1933 in Tacoma, WA. to Frederick LeRoy Wallace and Helen Helga Turvall. It was working at Ft. Lewis, WA that she was introduced to Clyde Edward Cummings, a Captain in the U.S. Army. They were married 6 months later in February 1956. The military life quickly led them to Ft. Sill, OK where their first son, Craig, was born. From there they went to North Carolina, then to Stuttgart and Bad Kissingen, Germany, where their second son, Carter, was born. The wife of an officer kept her busy with various military social activities at each stop. Her family returned to the States with assignments at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Omaha, NE, Washington, DC, and then Campbell, CA with Clyde’s first tour of Vietnam. His return took the family to Ft. Ord, CA, then back to Cupertino, CA with Clyde’s second tour in Vietnam. They were divorced in 1972. Carol kept busy managing her two rascals and pursuing her college degree at San Jose State where she graduated in 1974 with a degree in Art. After several years working in residential and commercial interior design she began working for the United States Federal Government as a Construction Project Manager with the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court based in San Francisco, and then with the U.S. Air Force, at Travis AFB, CA and Aviano AB, Italy. Her assignment at Aviano was to supervise the construction of housing for pilots and support crew during the NATO Kosovo conflict. Italy was without a doubt her favorite place to live, so much so, she chose to retire there rather than take a new assignment in Atlanta, GA. She was a kid in a candy store living in Italy with her background in art history. Carol was an avid traveler, visiting all over the world including a trip to Antarctica in 2006. As an art lover she enjoyed visiting museums and for a time volunteered as a docent at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. She loved cats and took much enjoyment in spoiling them rotten. Some health issues brought Carol back to the States in 2013 to be closer to her son, Craig, in Jonesboro, AR. She still enjoyed making trips to California and Europe with life-long friends.
Carol is survived by her half-sister, Linda Lum (William), sons Craig (Carol) and Carter Cummings. Granddaughters, Melissa Cummings, and Sara (Julius) Wong. Grandsons, Drew and Alex (Felicia) Cummings. And, great-granddaughters, Amalia Wong, and Sophia Cummings, and cat. Micro.
She is preceded in death by her cats, Shelly, Midnight, Charlie, Casey, Joey, Checkers, Cindy, Lola, and Bianca.
A private memorial will be held by the family at a later date and those wishing to can make contributions to their local animal shelter or pet adoption/rescue agency.
