Carl was born in Malden, Missouri on December 5, 1923.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Cornelius and Lessie Hope Scholes, two brothers, J. C. Scholes and Eugene Scholes, a sister, Juanita Kirby and his beloved son, Steven Carl Scholes.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary Ruth Morgan Scholes of the home, a daughter-in-law, Leslie, a grandson, Matthew Scholes, his wife Rosie and their daughter Madison Kailyn, a granddaughter, Ashlee Scholes Henemyer and her husband Jeremy, of Long Beach, California; and one brother, Harry Scholes of Temecula, California.
He graduated from Malden High School in Malden, Missouri. His first job was fingerprinting all employees at the Malden Air Base.
During World War II he was served in the Army in the 75th Infantry Division, 275th Combat Engineers in Scotland, Wales, France, Holland, and Belgium. He was awarded 3 bronze stars for campaigns in Central Europe.
In 1948 he went on active duty in the reserve army where he was on recruiting duty in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and St. Louis, Missouri. In 1949 he went in the Regular Army and served in 5th Army Headquarters.
In the meantime, he had met Mary Ruth so they were married and moved to Chicago. The Army had other plans, and he was sent to the Far East Command in Tokyo, Japan where he was on recruiting duty signing up members even from his home town of Malden, Missouri.
After being discharged, but still in the reserves, he took Mary Ruth to California and remained there until the Korean War. He was sent to Ft. Bliss, Texas and then was deployed to Okinawa for six months.
After a final discharge in 1951, he and Mary Ruth went back to California where he worked for aircraft companies until he became a barber. He owned barber shops in Hermosa Beach and Lomita, California and also in Piggott, Arkansas.
He retired from Northrop Corporation in El Segundo, California.
He moved to Jonesboro in 1988 where he assisted Mary Ruth in being caregivers for many of her family members.
He was chief cook in their home along with many other duties which enabled Mary Ruth to serve in many ways in their church and community. She has always said that whatever rewards are given to her in heaven, he will deserve the same.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of VFW and American Legion.
Funeral services will be 1:00 Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Richard Crawford, Kathy Holler and Jerry Morgan officiating and Arlis Dickerson as an eulogist. A visitation will be from 4-4:30 Tuesday, at Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home in Piggott, Arkansas with burial to follow at Piggott Cemetery. Visitation in Jonesboro will be from 6-8 Monday night at Emerson Funeral Home.
