C. Bryan “Popsie” Jelks, 92, died February 7, 2007 at NEA Medical Center.
Mr. Jelks was born September 6, 1914 in Jonesboro, and graduated from Jonesboro High School.
On June 26, 1938 he married Bonnie Ballew, who passed away in 2002. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Military. After the war Mr. Jelks joined his brother, Chilton, and became one of the pioneers of the retail automobile industry in Jonesboro. With his brother and son, Harold (Hal) Jelks, they operated Jelks Jonesboro Motor Company for most of its Eighty Two years existence. He was a member of Jonesboro Elks Club and Cornerstone Methodist Church, formerly the Huntington Avenue Methodist Church.
Mr. Jelks hobbies included working in his shop making devices, and researching words.
Mr. Jelks is survived by his son, Harold (Hal) Jelks; his daughter-in-law, Brenda Jelks; two grandchildren, Chantel Jelks and Jarrett Jelks, one great-grandchild, Braiden Lopez, three step-grandchildren, Sabrina Osborne, Heather Grissom and Travis Grissom, and four step great grandchildren.
Besides his beloved wife of sixty four years, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda, two brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral service will be 10:00 A.M. Monday February 12, 2007 at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Tommy Toombs officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be held Sunday February 11, 2007 from 3-5:00 P.M. at Emerson Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers are members of the Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Larry Featherston, Jack Sugg, Robert Box, Don Wright, Bruce Barnes and Leonard McDaniel
