Larry Owens, 75, of Jonesboro passed from this life Thursday, November 12, at NEA Baptist Hospital. He was born and raised in the Cane Island area of Lake City, AR.
Larry was born July 11, 1945, to the late H.R. “Rusty” Owens and Hazel Northern Owens in Lake City.
He graduated as a Lake City “Catfish” in the class of 1963 and then went on to attend Southern Baptist College in Walnut Ridge.
Larry was saved, ordained a deacon, and surrendered to preach at his home church, Bethabara Baptist in Lake City, AR. He was ordained as a minister at his first pastorate, Southfork Baptist Church, in Gurdon, AR. He was also the pastor of Strawfloor Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Rowes Chapel Baptist in Caraway, AR, Providence Baptist in Needham, AR, and retired from Lunsford Baptist of Lake City after 16 years. He served on two short term mission trips, one to San Marcos, Guatemala, and one to the Ivory Coast, Africa. He was a bi-vocational pastor and owner of Larry Owens Construction. Larry spent the last year and a half as a resident in Lakeside Nursing Home while sharing a room with his identical twin, Garry.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his son, Baby Samuel Owens; siblings, Winnie Spikes, Bobby Owens, Ronald Owens, Janet Brewer, and Deborah Gilley.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sue Ladd Owens, of the home; four children, Andi (Jamie) Jarvis, Steve Owens, Alisa (Michael) Hampton, all of Jonesboro, and Aaron (Natalie) Owens of Little Rock; nine grandchildren, Alex Jarvis, Reese and Riley Owens, Raegan, Blake, and Bo Hampton, Emerson, Allie Grace, and Ellis Owens; brothers, Garry Owens (his twin), Donnie (Monica) Owens, both of Lake City, Hershel (Theresa) Owens of West Memphis, and Mike Owens of Conway; sisters, Peggy Diane (George) Wright and Beverly (Kenny) Lomax, both of Jonesboro, and brother-in-law, Rick Brewer, of Jonesboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A visitation will be from 12:30 – 2 pm Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at Emerson Funeral Home.
A funeral service will follow the visitation at 2 pm with Brother Ron Langston and Darin Owens officiating. Burial will follow at Lower Cane Island Cemetery with nephews being active pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will include: Rick Carter, Bill Strickland, Jim Ladd, Don Ladd, Lynn Wimberley, Charles Ledbetter, Eddy Clark, Henry Lynn, Jake Gilley, Ronnie McMasters, Cooper Taylor, Joe Little, Jody Brown, Alex Moody, Janssen Settlemoir, Lunsford Baptist Men’s Sunday School Class, and the Lake City High School Class of 1963.
Memorials may be made to: Lunsford Baptist Church or Bethabara Baptist Church in Lake City, Mt. Zion Baptist Association (Short term mission trips), or to the Alzheimer’s Association of Arkansas.
