Bobby R. Miller, 82, of Jonesboro, passed from this life on Friday, June 1, 2018, at the Delta Medical Center in Memphis.

Bobby was born in the West Ridge community of Mississippi County and at age 17 entered the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Korean War. Bobby was discharged in July 1956 with the rank of Sergeant and entered Arkansas State College.

At Arkansas State, Bobby was a member of the track team where he was active in several field events. He set and held the high jump and long jump school records for several years and was a four-year letterman. Bobby earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree from ASU and began an educational career at Valley View High School as a science teacher. Bobby taught two years in the class room then served one year as high school principal before being named Superintendent of Schools in 1965. He served in this capacity until retiring at the end of the school year in 1988. During his administration at Valley View, Bobby was selected to be the Arkansas Delegate to visit and tour the new U.S. Air Force Academy facility in Colorado Springs prior to its official opening.

Bobby served several years on the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Basketball Tournament Executive Committee and also served for several terms on the Craighead County Equalization Board.

Bobby served as the first administrator of the current Craighead County Jail when it opened on Willett Road. He was a founding member of the Craighead County Sheriff's Office Mounted Patrol and was one of 8 men who purchased and secured the necessary equipment to start and operate the Craighead County Rodeo, which later became the Northeast Arkansas Rodeo, when it was located at the Fairgrounds on Stadium Boulevard.

Bobby is a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Valley View Ruritan Club and the Jonesboro Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed deer hunting in Arkansas and especially enjoyed annual trips to Colorado and Montana to hunt big game. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents: Albert and Lula Hulcy Miller; his wife, Rose Miller; 1 sister, Elaine McCoy; and 5 brothers: Ecil, Ralph, Bill, Owen and Ronnie Miller.

Survivors include 1 son, Matt Miller of Jonesboro;
1 daughter and son-in-law: Rayanna and Gordon Moore of Bryant;
2 sisters: Betty Smith of Keiser and Marsha Midkiff of Williamsburg, Virginia;
3 grandchildren: Blake Moore, Aaron Moore and Megan Farley and her husband Jimmy, all of Jonesboro; and
4 great grandchildren: Easton James Farley, Judah Kai Farley, Lillian Rose Moore and Wallace Ponder Moore.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Randy Stimach officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will precede the funeral service from 1-3 p.m. in the Chapel. Nephews will serve as active pallbearers.
