Bob Mccall

October 24, 1926 — March 17, 2012

Bob McCall, 85, of Jonesboro, died March 17, 2012 at the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House. He was born in Jonesboro October 24, 1926 to Oscar & Mamie Bell Mabry McCall. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. His hobbies included golf, gardening, and his favorite hobby, water color painting.

He served in the U.S. Navy in 1945-46. He trained at Great Lakes, Illinois Naval Training Center and then to Fort Pierce, Florida for amphibious training. When he was assigned in Norfolk, Virginia, he served on a brand new ship, the USS Hunter Marshall. He traveled down through the Atlantic to the Caribbean Sea to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. When World War II was over, he was stationed at Guantanamo Bay. When the war was over, his ship was going to the Pacific for the invasion of Japan. He was a Gunner-Mate Striker Seaman.

He attended Memphis Woodard School of Photography. He photographed his first wedding in 1948 and went on to photograph over 1000 weddings. He loved taking senior pictures because he was able to use his creativity. He retired from the photography business in 2001. He was also co-owner and barber at Ideal Barber Shop and had worked for Son Wilson. He served as past president of the Arkansas Professional Photography Association and served on the St. Mark’s Church Vestry and was a director on the board of Craighead County Historical Society, past member of Professional Photographers of the Ozarks, Southwest Photographers Association, and the Arkansas Professional Photographers Association. He was known as “Poppa” to his grandchildren and was well known for all the jokes he told like walking 2 miles a day and he would call it 5 miles.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley Stephens McCall; children, Becky McCall (Randy) Wrinkles, Rob (Sandy) McCall; his grandchildren, Brock, Houston, and Barrett Wrinkles, Luke and Lyndsey McCall, all of Jonesboro; and a brother, John McCall of Bend, Oregon; and sister-in-law, Irma Jo McCall.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James “Mert” McCall; two sisters, Lou Ann (John) Bond and Nan Quinn.

Graveside services will be held Monday, March 19, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Jonesboro Memorial Park with Rev. Curtis Shatley officiating. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 18, 2012 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
