Bill Cox Jr.

William Stanley Cox, Jr. (“Bill”) of Jonesboro, descendent of pioneer Jonesboro families, died Sunday, March 4, 2018, at St. Bernard’s Hospital following a brief battle with lung cancer. Bill was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 31, 1936. He was the only child of the late William Stanley Cox, Sr. (“Stanley”) and Florence Nash Cox of Jonesboro. Bill attended South Elementary, Annie Camp Junior High School and Jonesboro High School graduating in 1954.In 1954, he enrolled at the University of Mississippi and graduated from the School of Pharmacy in 1958. Bill was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and had received the honor of being named Grand Master.

He married Mimi Lomax in August 1957 and they celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2017. After graduating from Ole Miss with his pharmacy degree, Bill returned to Jonesboro and went to work at his family’s Globe Drug Store. Bill was a fixture at the Globe until it closed in 2000. After selling the Globe, Bill worked at various drug stores including Super D, Clarke Family Pharmacy in Earle, and Soo’s Family of Pharmacies.
Bill is survived by Mimi and their two children, Sammye Pagan (Jeff) of Jonesboro and Buddy Cox (Gina) of Birmingham, Alabama, and five grandchildren, Matt Pagan (Elisabeth) of Denver, Colorado and Jonathan Pagan of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Peary Cox, Tyler Cox and Emily Cox, all of Birmingham, Alabama.

In April 1969, Bill began his personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He became a Bible scholar and began working with various youth ministries at First United Methodist Church and Trinity Church. He accompanied First United Methodist Church’s Christian Edition and Trinity Church’s Maranatha youth choirs on numerous summer trips to Mexico and across the United States. He also started a Wednesday night Bible study at his home that was simply and affectionately called “Group.” Numerous junior and senior high school and college aged students had the benefit of his mentoring over the years.

He also developed a heart for reaching the world for Christ working with numerous missionaries in Mexico, Chile, Greece, Egypt, and India and he supported numerous other missionaries in all parts of the world over the years. He loved God and he loved people, particularly family. He was an avid fisherman, St. Louis Cardinals fan, and Ole Miss and Red Wolf fan. He was a licensed pharmacist in Arkansas and Texas. He was a member of the Arkansas Nettleton Lion’s Club, the Jonesboro Bridge Studio achieving Bronze Life Master status, the advisory board for the Pregnancy Resource Center, the ROMEO club (the Retired Old Men Eating Out Club), and Life Church Jonesboro.

Visitation will be on Friday, March 9 at Emerson Funeral Home from 6 pm to 8 pm. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, March 10 at Jonesboro Memorial Park at 1:00 p.m. The memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, March 10 at Emerson Funeral Home at 2:00 pm. Honorary pallbearers include all former employees of the Service Pharmacy and Globe Drug Store, members of the Nettleton Lions Club, the Christian Edition and Maranatha youth choirs, attendees of Wednesday Night Bible Study (“Group”), members of the Jonesboro Bridge Studio, the ROMEO club, the Magnolias, Craighead County Master Gardeners, owners and coworkers of Clark Family Pharmacy and Soo’s Family of Pharmacies, Don Berry, Dewaine Beisner, Bob Seale, Ben Bush, Craig Scallions, Keith Rubottom,Rev. Ken Jones, Dr. Terry Doyle, and Sarah Ellison.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Bill Cox be made to IGO Ministries (P. O. Box 1008, Semmes, AL 36575-1008), EME Ministries (EME Ministries, PO Box 256, Jonesboro, Arkansas 72403) or the Gideons International Processing Center, P.O. Box 97251, Washington, DC 20090-7251).
