Betty Lou Clayton, 87, of Jonesboro, passed away on June 11 at South Gate Living Center in Caruthersville, MO. Born on July 18, 1936, in Dixie, Arkansas, to the late Marcus and Sarah Bailey, she spent most of her life in Jonesboro after a brief period in Washington DC, where she attended Business School. She was a current member of Nettleton Baptist Church and a former member of Walnut Street Baptist Church, where she was active in the choir and taught Sunday school. Betty was also a long-time member of the Women's Ministry Union and briefly worked at Nettleton Baptist Church.
Betty's career included a year with the FBI at the Pentagon. She also volunteered at the hospital. Betty was an avid reader who enjoyed spending time with her family.
Preceding her in death were her husband of many years, Eugene Clayton; her brother, Randal Bailey; her sister, Bonnie (Clifton) Adams; and her niece, Ruth (Craig) Treadway; brother and sister in laws, Ulis and Delene Clayton, Joy Clayton, J.L. and Phyliss Clayton, Norma Clayton, Walker Dee Leach, Rachel Clayton, Sterling Montgomery, Levina Clayton, Orvil Sims, Leilah Clayton, Glynn Medlin, James Laughlin, and Buddy Clayton.
She is survived by her son, Barry (Nioka) Clayton of Jonesboro, and her daughter, Angela Byrd of Jonesboro. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Amber (Josh) Ferguson, Jacy (Josh) Glaub, Clay Cooper, and Mason Cooper; her great-grandchildren, Jett and Lynley Ferguson; her niece, Rita (Steve) Barkley; her sister-in-law, Beverly Bailey, and her sons, Randy, Mark, and David Bailey; as well as other nephews, Chris and Chandler Treadway, and Ty and Caleb Barkley.
She is also survived by more sister in laws, Ellie Slentz Clayton and June Clayton Laughlin; nephews, Hank Clayton, Tommy Montgomery, Bill Clayton, Mike Clayton, Jon Medlin, Derick Dudley, Rodger Sims, Trey Lench; and nieces, Lynn Armour, Karen Sellars, Shelly Fisher, and Patty McClure.
The family will hold a private burial at a later date.
