Betty Jean Howerton

Betty Jean Smith Howerton, age 90, of Jonesboro, passed from this life on Sunday, June 5, 2022, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro.

Born in Blytheville, Betty grew up in the Paragould area and was a 1952 graduate of Greene County Tech High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Samuel Mack Howerton, and lived many years in Marked Tree before moving to Jonesboro 25 years ago.

Betty was a cosmetologist, housewife, and kindergarten teacher's aide. She enjoyed painting and flower gardening. Betty was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church where she was active in the choir for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Howerton, brother Sam Smith, and sisters Willie Norton and Jan Fain.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law: Darryl and Judy Howerton; and

one daughter and son-in-law: Karon and Brad Fields, all of Jonesboro;

6 Grandchildren: Courtney Howerton, Aaron Howerton (Angie), Dan Fields (Caylee) Andrew Fields, Rachel Fields Hilliard (Bradley), and Hannah Fields; and

8 Great Grandchildren: John Howerton, Christy Howerton, Eden Howerton, Joey Howerton, Oliver Howerton, Katelyn Howerton, Andi Fields and Wade Hilliard.

She is also loved by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday at Emerson Funeral Home. Following the visitation, there will be a funeral procession to Brown's Chapel Cemetery near Paragould where a graveside funeral service will be conducted with Rev. Jerry Parker officiating.
