It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Arkansas State Police Sergeant K-9 Hemi, who lost his life in the line of duty on Monday, July 30th, 2018. Hemi died as a result of a gunshot wound, sustained after making contact with a suspect that had fled from officers.
Hemi was born June 28th, 2012 in the Netherlands. He was brought to the United States in September of 2013 and received his K-9 officer training under the direction of Captain Roby Rhoads, K-9 Coordinator for the Arkansas State Police.
Hemi faithfully served the Arkansas State Police for 5 years with his partner and best friend, ASP Corporal Rockey Rapert. Hemi worked as a dual purpose K-9, proving to be an invaluable partner to many agencies in Northeast Arkansas including the 2nd Judicial District Drug Task Force, Blytheville Police Department, Paragould Police Department, Jonesboro Police Department, Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office, and the Poinsett County Sheriff’s Office.
Those who worked with Hemi, knew him as the K-9 that loved to work. Nothing excited him more than getting into the patrol car with Corporal Rapert. Hemi wanted to be the best and wanted others to know it, as he would always show off in training with other K-9 teams.
Hemi was not a lover of affection, but had a special place in his heart for children. Not often fond of adults, Hemi loved watching children interact with Corporal Rapert and welcomed them to pet him and give him treats.
The Arkansas State Police family will never forget Hemi’s dedication to safeguard fellow troopers and the citizens of Arkansas. He paid the ultimate sacrifice in an act of protection, and for that we will forever honor his life, his service, and his legacy.
There will be a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. Monday, August 6, 2018, in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Captain Roby Rhoads, Colonel Bill Bryant and Corporal Chase Melder presiding.
In honor of Hemi’s great love for children, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution should consider donating to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
