Ann Maynard passed from this life to her heavenly home on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family and friends.
Ann is survived by her husband of 24 years, Troy Maynard; her four children, Glen (Rhonda) McKay of Batesville, Regina McKay, Shelby (Ben) Knight, both of Jonesboro and Vernon (Kim) McKay of Brookland; three step daughters Denise Cline, Sandra (Richard) Cline both of Jonesboro and Lynette (Dennis) Hattenhaur of Paragould; four brothers, Jay Ballard of Holly, Michigan; Lewis Ballard of Piggott; Frank Ballard of Atlanta, Georgia; and Rick (Skip) Ballard of Piggott; one sister Cindy (Tony) Smith of Piggott.
She was a devoted and loving Memaw to her grandchildren Shauna Foster, Sara (Jim) Konermann, Kaileigh and Shayne Sutton, Loriann and Bobby Martinez, Hailey Knight, Jeremiah Knight, Lindsay (Tyler) McCarty, Alysha, Tucker and Jenna McKay. She was also Grandma Ann to TJ (Angel) Cline, Abby (Alex) Ramirez, Natalie Smith, Devin (Elise) Hattenhaur and Dylan Hattenhaur. Memaw loved her great grandchildren Railey and Addysin McLard, Jasper, Ian, Edge and Kaitlyn Foster, Chloe and Kayde Konermann, Aspyn Fowler, Andrew Martinez, Rosie McCarty, Noah and Luke Cline, and Aria Hattenhaur and many nieces and nephews who cherished their beloved aunt Phyliss, and life-long friend, Barbara Strong.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, brother, and first husband of 29 years Glen McKay.
Ann was always active in her community serving as school room mother, Girl Scout leader and Sunday school teacher. Memaw always made a point to have lunch with her great grandchildren every week at school, something the children always looked forward to. She loved gardening and growing flowers, sewing, raising cattle, especially her beloved bottle raised cow named Jersey, and being a NEA District Fair volunteer. Ann was known around the fair for countless entries of baked goods, flowers, photography, canned goods from her garden and sewing projects. She won countless blue ribbons, but her proudest trophies were always her numerous Best of Show and Ball Canning Awards. Ann was very proud to be named Craighead County Member of the Year of the Greensboro Extension Homemaker Club.
Ann owned and operated Ann’s Restaurant from April 1983 until she retired in September of 1997 to care for her beloved mother. She loved to cook and was exceptionally skilled in the kitchen, whether it was making her Christmas candies, homemade fruit cake, mud cookies and always made her blue ribbon biscuits with chocolate gravy when her children had sleepovers.
Ann made many friends during her restaurant days and formed friendships that are still strong today. She was honored to make party trays for Bill Clinton when he was campaigning for governor in the 80’s and was thrilled to receive an invitation to his inaugural ball. She always went out of the way to make her restaurant patrons feel at home. She even spoiled them at times by keeping a small can of English peas under the counter because that’s the only vegetable one customer would eat, cutting the bone out of a pork chop for another and always peeling one person’s tomatoes because that’s how they liked them. She loved her job and her customers.
Ann was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where she enjoyed teaching, working in vacation bible school and cooking for the children on Wednesday night. She enjoyed decorating the church for events and holidays, often using her own cut flowers from her beautiful yard.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10am at Emerson Funeral Home, 1629 E. Nettleton in Jonesboro with Joel McMasters officiating. Burial will be at Macedonia Cemetery and honored to serve as pallbearers are Tucker McKay, Jason Yates, Dennis Hattenhaur, Jim Konermann, Bobby Martinez, and Jacob Williams.
