Alton D. Holmes

Alton Devon Holmes, 95, of Jonesboro passed from this life on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at NEA Baptist Hospital.

Alton was born in Bay on February 5, 1921 to the late Charles W. and Florence Hall Holmes. He lived in the Bay/Jonesboro area all of his life. He served our country during World War II with the US Army Air Corps, and held the rank of Sergeant during his time of service. He co-owned Holmes Brothers' Cotton Gin and farmed until his retirement. He attended Bay First Baptist Church for many years. For the last 30 years, he has been a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church where he was a member of the Fishers of Men Sunday School Class. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. Alton was a man that never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need. Alton enjoyed meeting with his coffee buddies at McDonald's and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. The love Alton had for his family and Church family will be missed but never forgotten.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Maralyn Bishop Holmes of Jonesboro; one son, Mark and his wife Phyllis of Claremore, OK; four grandchildren, Devon Holmes Shouse of Nashville, TN, Joel Holmes (Kelli) of Broken Arrow, OK, Kathryn Holmes and Hannah Holmes both of Claremore, OK; nine great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; his sister-in-law and twin sister to his wife Maralyn, Aliene Simmons of Jonesboro; and multiple nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be Monday, June 20, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Emerson Memorial Chapel located at 1703 E Nettleton Ave, Jonesboro, AR with Jerry Parker officiating. Interment will directly follow at Oaklawn Cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of all arrangements.

Visitation will be Monday, June 20, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the Emerson Memorial Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Chris Holmes, Joel Holmes, Jim Tice, Jim Moore, Bill Spurlock, David Hundley, and Randy Mink.

Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Baxter, James Brown, Randal Baily, Tom Craft, Doyle Meyman, the Fishers of Men Sunday School Class and the Jean Berry Sunday School Class of Walnut Street Baptist Church.

For lasting memorials the family requests that you consider the building fund at Bay First Baptist Church, 200 Central Avenue, Bay, AR 72411; or Walnut Street Baptist Church, 2105 Scenic Drive, Jonesboro, AR 72401, in loving memory of Alton D. Holmes.
