Alice Mae Wheeler, 86, was born January 8, 1922, in Jonesboro, to the late Fred and Ophelia Marlar Mitchell, and died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Craighead Nursing Center. Mrs. Wheeler was retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. where she worked as an information operator for many years. She was known as an avid reader, listened to hundreds of books on tape after losing her eyesight, and enjoyed working The New York Times Sunday crosswords, "In ink", as long as someone would read the clues to her and record her answers.
Mrs. Wheeler was of the Church of Christ belief and, in addition to her parents, was preceded in death by her first husband, Lee Whitlock, brothers, Roger E. Mitchell, and Murray F. Mitchell, and grandson David Whitlock.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Whitlock and wife Veronica, of Lewiston, Idaho, V. C. Wheeler, Jr. and wife Karen, of Jonesboro, and Wayne Wheeler and wife Joy, of Kimberling City, Missouri, and one daughter, M. A. Wheeler, of Jonesboro, 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a special friend, Charles Enger, of Poynette, Wisconsin.
Visitation will be from 10:00 until 11:30 A.M., Saturday morning at Emerson Funeral Home., and will be followed by a private commital at Jonesboro City Cemetery with David Gibson officiating.
The children would like to especially thank the nursing staff and caregivers at Craighead Nursing Center and St. Bernards Hospice whose love and care provided their mother the peace and comfort she deserved.
