Agnes Sumner Stewart, 96, of Jonesboro, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2016, at St. Elizabeth's Place in Jonesboro.
Agnes was born in Luray, Tennessee, on October 19, 1919 and grew up in Marianna, Arkansas. She lived many years in Grenada, Mississippi before moving to Jonesboro 35 years ago. While living in Grenada, Agnes operated the Now and Then Shop for many years, was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Junior Auxiliary.
Agnes was a member of Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro where she was active in the Sonshine Sunday school class and was also a teacher in the 3 year old Sunday school class. She was an active member of St. Bernards Medical Center Auxiliary for many years and was instrumental in the formation and establishment of church services at St. Elizabeth's Place. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents: Claude and Myrtle Sumner; husband, Charles Stewart; and 3 sisters.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law: Charlie and Janet Stewart of Jonesboro;
2 brothers: Michael Sumner of Como, Mississippi, and Buddy Sumner of California;
3 grandchildren: Kimberly Stewart of Jonesboro, Kelley Stewart of Fort Worth, Texas, and Josh (Kelly) Stewart of Houston, Texas; and
3 great grandchildren: Reese Stewart, Ryann Stewart and Haidyn Stewart.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Mike Martin officiating. Burial will be private.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Emerson Chapel.
