Agnes Adele Brejot Smith Wathen

May 6, 1915 — October 11, 2007

Agnes Adele Brejot Smith Wathen born May 6, 1915 in Jonesboro to Louis Brejot and Martha Espy Brejot. She married George Gaylon Smith October 11, 1951. Mr. Smith passed away July 6, 1954. She married Moore T. Wathen September 12, 1970 and he passed away May 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Maude Hortense Perkins and a stepson Tom M. Wathen of Akron, Ohio.

She graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1933 and attended Aggie College for two years. Her first job was working for Joe Martin at Home Owners Loan Corporation transferring to Memphis, TN and then back to Jonesboro; Gates Insurance Agency; E.C. Barton & Company until she married Mr. Smith. She was employed at Mercantile Bank from 1953 until her retirement in 1970.

Mrs. Wathen is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane van Slyke and step-daughter, Barbara Wathen Morris and her husband Lt. Col. (Ret.) David N. Morris, all of Jonesboro; Step-daughter in-law, Gloria Wathen of Akron, Ohio;

Three grandchildren and spouses: Caroline Adele Tyner Brodell and Tony of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, J. Peyton Tyner and Terri Lynn; Gaylon Hazlett Tyner and Julianna, all of Jonesboro. Seven step-grandchildren and their spouses; Leslie Morris O'Neal and Bob of Rogers, AR, Letha Morris of Jonesboro, Linda Wathen Heffern and John, Mary Wathen Thomas and Neal, Tom Wathen and Tracy, all of Akron, Ohio, Elizabeth Wathen Clough and Bruce, Teresa Wathen Depinet and Bob of New Albany, Ohio.

She is also survived by great-grandchildren: Anthony Grier Brodell and Rachael Lynn Brodell of Poplar Bluff, MO; Elizabeth Grace Tyner, Audrey Brooke Tyner, Chloe Peyton Tyner, Amirah Elaine Tyner, and Bethany Caroline Tyner, all of Jonesboro,; Paige Elizabeth O'Neal of Rogers, AR and Joshua David O'Neal of Baton Rouge, LA and 13 step-great-grandchildren in Akron, OH; two cousins: Jan Brejot Arnold of Germantown, TN. and Claudine Brejot Blount of Little Rock, AR and a special friend, Ernestine Wheeler of Jonesboro.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School and was a member of the Helen Freeze Sunday School Class in later years.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Bruce Tippit officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church.
