Sister Henrietta Hockle OSB

Sister Henrietta Hockle, OSB Sr. Henrietta, 86, died on January 2, 2014 in the Holy Angels Convent Infirmary. She was born on April 8, 1927 to Joe and Minnie (Thielemier) Hockle in Jonesboro, Arkansas. She had one older sister, Marjorie, and two younger, Dorothy and Patricia, respectively.

After graduating from Blessed Sacrament School, she attended Holy Angels Academy and entered Holy Angels Convent in 1943 and made first vows in 1945. After making first vows, she earned a B.S. Degree in English from St. Scholastica College in Duluth, and earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from ASU.

She taught in Catholic Schools in Texas, and Arkansas, was principal for 9 years before Bishop McDonald appointed her Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Little Rock for seventeen years. When the Arkansas State Department discontinued accreditation non-public schools, Sr. Henrietta was instrumental in organizing a state chapter and secured a chapter for a state chapter of the National Non-Public School Accreditation Association in 1988. Sr. Henrietta was elected Prioress from 1973 to 1999. During her two terms as prioress, she was instrumental in securing a Subiaco priest each month, for spiritual direction and conferences.

After 25 years, since dedication of the convent, many renovations were needed to the building. These included new metal siding on the exterior of the building and numerous improvements on the interior, including, new carpet, new telephone system, and beginning of the replacement of new heating and cooling system.

Additions to St.Bernard’s included St. Bernard’s Village, The Heart Care Center, Medical clinics and acquisition of Behavioral Health Care Center. After leaving office, Sr. Henrietta was editor of the community newsletter, the ECHOES, and published different books, including history of the hospital, the convent and Blessed Sacrament Parish.

Visitation and Rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. on Friday January 3, 2014, and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday in Holy Angels Convent chapel, Father Udo Ogbuji will be the principal celebrant and pallbearers will be the Knights of Columbus, Council 1702 of Blessed Sacrament Parish, with Emerson Funeral Home in charge. Interment will be in Our Lady of Mount Olivet Cemetery on the convent grounds. Memorials may be made to the Retirement Fund of Holy Angels Convent, P.O. Box 1209, Jonesboro, Arkansas 72403-1209. We have loved her in life; let us not forget her in death.
